Proton Adds Three Satellites To GLONASS - Tenth Proton Launch in 2008 Year
25.12.2008
A Proton M launch vehicle with three GLONASS navigation satellites onboard was launched from Baikonur at 13:43 Moscow time (MT) today, on December 25. The launch was conducted under the Russian Federation “Global Navigation System Program”- CLONASS. The spacecrafts were successfully delivered to target orbit.
The launch was conducted under the Russian Federation “Global Navigation System Program”- CLONASS.
GLONASS is a dual –purpose global navigation system designed to serve the Russian Ministry of Defense and civil users. The system is intended to provide continues navigation coverage allowing unlimited number of domestic and foreign users at sea, in the air, and land to determine precise coordinates, velocity and time. Since its initial launch, the CLONASS family has been delivered into orbit aboard Proton launch vehicle.
This is the tenth and final Proton mission this year, and the 341st Proton flight overall ( including 54 Proton commercial flights overall , out of which 49 missions has been carried out under auspices of International Launch Service Inc. since 1996)
It is noteworthy that Proton has had more launches in 2008 than any other of its heavy-lift counterpart’s world-wide (four launches in support of the RF Federal Program and MoD, and six commercial launches for ILS). In addition, there have been a total of fourteen launches this year using Khrunichev’s vehicles ( ten flights with a Proton, three launches with a light–class Kosmos 3M vehicle – one flight of Rockot launcher and three flights of a Kosmos 3M).
About Khrunichev:
Khrunichev Research and Production Space Center is one of the cornerstones of the Russian space industry. Khrunichev manufactures the Proton system and is developing the Angara launch system. Khrunichev includes among its branches a number of key manufacturers of launch vehicle and spacecraft components in Moscow and in other cities of the Russian Federation. July Incident Involving Proton (Addendum)27.07.2010 The rail convoy with the Proton launch vehicle assigned to support launch of GLONASS M satellites arrived in the Integration-and-Test Facility at the Baikonur launch base yesterday and the launcher units were offloaded from rail cars.
At present, a board of experts set up by the Khrunichev Space Center is to determine the launcher status and to answer one question: Is this launch vehicle flightworthy to support the scheduled GLONASS mission?
The existing situation will have no effect on the launch of GLONASS satellites on a Proton launch vehicle planned to be carried out in September. The mission will take place as scheduled.
It is to be reminded that the dedicated rail convoy got subjected to an inadvertent impact near the city of Ulyanovsk on 18 July as this convoy was transporting a Proton launch vehicle.
